As her band hits the road, the metal trailblazer answers your questions on sexualisation in show business, finding inspiration in dreams and Spinal Tap moments on tour You wrote Bring Me to Life when you were 19 . When you perform it now, how do you relate to the younger you? becgoldsmith I was in an abusive relationship, so Bring Me to Life was partly about processing the reality of that abuse and asking myself, what are you gonna do about it? Like, pick yourself up. I wrote it when I was crushing on my [now] husband, but the theme is about a quest for something bigger: opening your heart, finding more depth. It’s very empowering to perform it now in huge places; I’m very proud of the 19-year-old me that wrote it. Artists often reveal their influences through the songs they choose to cover. You’ve performed both It’s a Fire and Glory Box by Portishead . What drew you to those songs? Ver

Dozens of ‘dangerous’ artworks are buried under dirt in Sydney, and Heap visitors will be asked to dig deep

Festival of Dangerous Ideas exhibition/installation in the cavernous foyer of Carriageworks will feature 80 works by eight Australian artists I’m watching a Hitachi earthmover bury a suitcase in a mound of dirt inside Carriageworks when my mind peels off on a surreal tangent: does the machine have job satisfaction? I happen to know that another machine on this job has an MOU with its human operator outlining fair work conditions, and I’m wondering if this excavator got the memo. In fact, the Hitachi just buried the memo: 25 tiles bearing the text of a labour agreement between artist Sophie Penkethman-Young and the 3D printer she used to make them. This weekend, members of the public will dig them up as part of Heap : an unusual mix of exhibition, installation and “archaeological dig” featuring 80 artworks by eight Australian artists, commissioned by the Festival of Dangerous Ideas (Fodi)

French Girls review – scrappy Australian film made for $28,000 reveals refreshing new talents

Low-fi, aesthetically austere work set in Sydney’s modelling scene makes you wonder what writer-director Hyun Lee might do with more resources The debut feature of writer-director Hyun Lee is a slightly scrappy drama set in Sydney’s modelling scene, reportedly made on a $28,000 budget and informed by Lee’s own experiences. Executive produced by Nash Edgerton , who appears in a small role towards the end, French Girls has nary a trace of the glitz, glam and artifice synonymous with the trade; it’s a low-fi and aesthetically austere work, with a messy, rough-edged kind of visual lyricism and a suite of naturalistic performances. The pared-back nature of the experience extends to its messaging, or lack thereof: this is not a film that views modelling through a probing intellectual framework, or offers much in the way of commentary. Lee has spoken about how she did not seek to “critique mode

Instant classics, odd inspirations and barcodes: 2026-27’s best and worst kits

There were some lovely efforts at the World Cup (not least by the co-hosts the USA ), and others more tedious than a 0-0 draw. It’s a mixed bag once again. It Ends review – gripping micro-budget horror ranks among the year’s best

Led by a stellar cast of gen-Z newcomers, Alex Ullom’s directorial debut is an expertly crafted nightmare about a road trip gone wrong Time loops often feel like the movies’ favorite zany stylistic trick: Bill Murray plotting to win Andie MacDowell’s heart, a college student solving the mystery of her own grizzly murder, or as a ruse for Anne Hathaway to face off with a T rex . The excellent new indie horror film It Ends takes a different approach with its nightmarish depiction of a carful of friends stuck in an endlessly repeating day. It’s less of the moony japes of Groundhog Day or Palm Springs than an arthouse spin on the Prometheus myth, with the unfortunate souls of the film cursed not with death but with the torture of eternal life. After helping their friend move into a new apartment, a crew of aimless twentysomethings take a late-night drive to get food, but after GPS leads them

It used to be our imperfect bodies that made us insecure. With AI, it’s our minds as well

For most of modern history, technology sought to imitate humans. Humans increasingly seek to imitate technology Two faces that appeared on my Instagram feed in recent months gave me pause. One belonged to John Travolta at Cannes . The other to Carla Bruni on a date night with her husband, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Both looked recognisably themselves, yet, they both also looked oddly unfamiliar. Their looks have provoked speculation about cosmetic enhancement, though never acknowledged by them. Bruni has previously denied having had work done. In any case the feeling lasted only a second: a flicker of unease, as though I were looking at people who had become approximations of themselves. Lambchop: Punching the Clown review – spectral, spellbindingly ambiguous stirring of US history

Their sole continuous member Kurt Wagner has displayed an admirable disinclination to rest on his laurels. He followed up Nixon with the austere, piano-driven Is a Woman and subsequently diverted into electronics, smothered his voice in Auto-Tune and distortion. Their last album, 2022’s The Bible , threw up everything from house music to glitchy rhythms to ambient drift to accompany Wagner’s pained ruminations on mortality and faith. Mary Heilmann obituary

Playful American painter whose works were informed by her previous focus on ceramics and sculpture Visitors to Mary Heilmann’s show at the Whitechapel Gallery in 2016 were offered the novel experience of looking at art while scooting about on wheeled wooden chairs. These, too, turned out to be artworks. One, Sunny Chair for the Whitechapel , had been made by Heilmann for the occasion. Rough-hewn from plywood, backed in nylon webbing and painted bright yellow, it seemed happily untidy; as an object, but also as a type. This was true of all the works in Looking at Pictures, and was intentional. Heilmann, who has died aged 86, had an untidy past as a maker. It was while doing a BA at the University of California, Santa Barbara (1959-62), that she discovered ceramics, which were to occupy her first decade as an artist. The untidiness of her artistic history, however, was to be shaped by more

The threatening thaw: climate professor on heatwave risks to tipping point of permafrost

Prof Gustaf Hugelius warns wildfires could accelerate release of methane and carbon as vast regions approach irreversible thresholds Heatwaves and wildfires are not just scorching forests, they are adding to the tipping point risks in the world’s vast permafrost regions, which contain three times more carbon than all the living vegetation on Earth. This is a major concern for Gustaf Hugelius, a professor at the Bolin Centre of Climate Research at Stockholm University, Sweden, and a leading authority on the risks from thawing tundra and peatlands. In this Q&A, he explains why the world should pay attention. Continue reading...

UC Berkeley professor admits to using AI to edit op-ed on students’ math skills

The Standard published a 2,000-word piece by Zvezdelina Stankova last week, in which the professor said some of her math students were “five to eight years” behind and lacked a “middle school” education on fractions and basic algebra. Stankova said the UC system’s test-blind admissions were to blame, suggesting that students who weren’t sufficiently prepared for the rigor of Berkeley’s mathematics program were admitted because a longstanding benchmark like the SAT had disappeared. Where did all the XXL clothes go? Fashion brands are scrapping plus sizes in the GLP-1 era

As weight-loss drugs gain popularity in the US, brands are scaling back their ranges – and frustrating customers In March 2023, the model, activist and writer Tess Holliday announced that she had been working as a size and inclusivity consultant for H&M. The fruits of their partnership felt like “one of the most meaningful things that I’ve done in my career”, she told US Vogue at the time. The fashion juggernaut had committed to an expansion of its sizes, from XL to 4XL, and to increased body diversity of its models. This bucked a trend, coming at an otherwise gloomy time for plus-sized fashion. By 2023, the fashion industry was in the grips of an Ozempic-fuelled celebration of skinny bodies, after its brief flirtation with curves during the body positivity movement of the late 2010s. ‘I need to think like a CEO’: Weezer on the shifting sands of success, ugly feelings and the joy of spreadsheets

As the self-professed geeky rockers release their conceptual 20th album, Rivers Cuomo and Patrick Wilson discuss dodging failure, being saved by fans and their obsessive creativity The first song Rivers Cuomo wrote for Weezer’s new album, their 20th, blatantly mimics the US rockers’ 1994 debut single, Undone (The Sweater Song). On the track CEO, the singer-guitarist grumbles over a slow, Velvets-y backing about having to crank out “another 90s jam” and wishing he could do “something new – but nobody wants to hear that ”. It’s a deliciously meta moment, but also one that allows Cuomo to gently vent “my frustrations over people wanting me to just write songs about our first two albums”. Cuomo wrote the song straight after SZNZ, the four-album song-cycle Weezer released throughout 2022, each album named after a season. That project fed his notoriously intense, analytic and occasionally obse
