First, you pass through the biennale’s colossal central exhibition, housed in a sequence of cavernous medieval warehouses. After that, the route takes in a suite of national pavilions (the Philippines, Latvia, Timor-Leste, Morocco, Malta, Oman). By the time art-lovers reach Ireland’s presentation, they are frequently exhausted, if not delirious. This year, Dublin-based artist Isabel Nolan has transformed the pavilion into a space of respite, both physical and intellectual – a secular chapel titled Dreamshook. Do you have to be hot at work? Eight people on how looks influence their jobs

Due to the rise of GLP-1s and cosmetic surgeries, professionals who weren’t usually subject to high beauty standards are facing new pressures In 1975, John T Molly’s book Dress for Success became a national bestseller. It promised the American workforce “scientific” proof that certain clothes could “increase your income” and “boost your status”. It offered searing advice like: “Sweaters give out nothing but negative impulses … they say ‘lower middle class’ and ‘loser.’” For those with office jobs, the workplace has long been a place where fashion counts. Molly’s book gave rise to ideas like power dressing and the adage about “dressing for the job you want, not the one you have”. But a new casual office culture, spurred by San Francisco tech companies where hoodies are the norm, plus the work-from-home revolution, was supposed to ameliorate some of those pressures. Fancy a Nobbly Bobbly? Or a Jelly Terror? The eye-popping guide to the greatest ice lolly wrappers ever

From Fonzie to Elvis to the Daleks, from a Mini Milk to a Seaside Saucy to a Freak Out … incredibly rare vintage ice lolly wrappers have now been memorialised in a 96-page, nostalgia-inducing delight Seven years ago, Jonny Trunk entered the house of a hoarder in Stockport that was bursting at the seams with a goldmine of British ephemera from the last half century. “You couldn’t get into the house,” recalls Trunk, who is an avid pop culture collector, as well as a writer, DJ, broadcaster and record-label owner. “It was full of all this stuff he had collected indiscriminately.” Growing up in an orphanage in Surrey, John Townsend began collecting milk bottle tops and by the 1950s had amassed a huge collection of cigarette and tobacco cards. He then simply continued at full speed. “He never stopped collecting ephemera,” says Trunk. “If it was a printed piece of paper with something on it, h

Hermione Carline obituary

My friend Hermione Carline, who has died aged 74, came from a long line of artists stretching back to the 19th century. But although she was an artist almost from birth, making just the sort of animal drawings and miniature books that remain a family tradition, she resisted following in the footsteps of her parents, the painters Richard Carline and Nancy Carline (nee Higgins), and began her career as a textile designer. Born in London, Hermione grew up in Hampstead, in a house filled with old books, old furniture and old paintings by generations of Carlines. It was “more like a museum than a house,” she said, and it left her “craving the modern world”. After Hampstead school for girls, she studied fine art at Camberwell School of Art, followed by an MA in textile design at the Royal College of Art from 1974 to 1977. Continue reading...

The president switched planes not once, but twice while leaving last month's NATO summit in Turkey. Love me, love my bruised ego: what the narcissist-artist film tells us about the fear of ageing

Bitter Christmas, Late Fame and The Christophers all depict geniuses aware of their waning acclaim and terrified it will end Entertainment culture is so preoccupied with nowness that last month we were inundated with speculation about how directors under 30 topping the box office would change the industry . None of them is dislikable – they might be catty, pathetic or abrasive, but they’re always entertaining – but they all bend to the ego whispering in their ear, beli

Momo and the Time Thieves review – kids’ fantasy jaunt sticks the boot into capitalism

This new adaptation of Michael Ende’s 1973 novel contains some neat parables for our digitally nihilistic age, but even a mystical tortoise can’t save it it from monotony Momo – the 1973 fantasy novel by German author Michael Ende, who also wrote The Neverending Story – has been adapted in live and animated forms before, in 1986 and 2001. This latest version, too, is ostensibly a live-action film – but it’s been made with so many visual effects it might as well have been a cartoon. Still, the residual human element represented by the cast feels necessary, given the story is about the dangers of letting capitalism suck away our ability to enjoy the moment. Over the years, readers have posited all kinds of metaphorical interpretations of the plot, which involves a world where grey beings arrive and con everyone into literally “banking” their time, so as to have it all to themselves. Never Had a Chance review – a slice of gritty British Asian life with a side of drug dealing and addiction

Two likely lads in their 20s deal with problematic lives that dramatically intersect in this persuasive London drama This gritty crime drama unfolds entirely within the Punjabi community in London’s Hounslow district, a plausible demographic situation in which white people are so peripheral to the story that they are little more than extras. In fact watching this well-crafted, if somewhat melodramatic, debut for director Jazz Bhalla makes one wonder why there aren’t more films made in the UK with entirely British Asian casts. Here, it doesn’t makes the film better or worse, but it certainly feels realistic and true to its milieu. The story revolves around two best friends in their 20s, Ravi (Amar Chaggar) and Jay (Jayant Singh), likely lads who spend a lot of time hanging out, getting high or drunk and ending nearly every sentence with the word “bro”. On the face of it, Jay seems like th

Nimrods review – Green Day’s early years inspire teenage kicks in amiable punk road movie

San Francisco’s pop-punk pioneers Green Day loom large in this fun, puppyish film about a scrappy band desperate to meet their idols Inspired by their own youthful rowdy escapades – “our early days of driving around in a van, tired, hungry, out of gas, out of money, struggling, creating trouble” – here is an amiable road-movie comedy about, soundtracked by and briefly featuring Californian pop-punk stalwarts Green Day. Like them, it is more pop than punk: a fundamentally sweet and puppyish teen comedy about dreaming big and following your heart, featuring three fundamentally decent, likable youths – for all that they indulge in some Superbad-style smutty banter, try to buy booze, steal the odd car, take magic mushrooms, skate, have green hair, get into mud fights and decline to tell their parents where they are going when they hit the road and head west from Kansas City to LA. Simulating Lunar Regolith with COMSOL for Mission Safety and Space Infrastructure

Current space exploration aims to establish permanent structures on the Moon, Mars, and eventually other planetary bodies. Successful lunar missions depend on understanding lunar regolith, the granular material covering the Moon’s surface, whose behavior is governed by low gravity, vacuum conditions, particle irregularity, electrostatic effects, and extreme thermal environments. This webinar will focus on two connected modeling problems related to lunar regolith: plume–regolith interaction during lunar landings and induction heating of porous regolith for thermal processing and melting. Together, these problems show how simulation with the COMSOL Multiphysics ® software can help engineering and research teams predict, control, and utilize granular lunar material. The first part of the talk will address plume–regolith interaction. During spacecraft landings, underexpanded rocket exhaust p

The Pout-Pout Fish review – Nick Offerman is best thing in kids cartoon adventure on the high seas

Offerman leads a talented cast, but this preschool picture book spinoff fails to inspire Grumpy Mr Fish (Nick Offerman) has a reputation for being a sourpuss, but when he teams up with baby sea dragon Pip (Nina Oyama) to locate a wish-granting fish, it’s pretty much guaranteed that we will discover some sort of heart of gold lurking beneath his gloomy exterior. Not that a picture book for the two to four-year-old crowd can’t be expanded into a satisfying narrative feature film universe, but this high seas adventure as personal growth is fairly by-the-numbers stuff. Based on the books by Deborah Diesen and Dan Hanna, The Pout-Pout Fish’s animation lacks the charm of the books’ illustrations, and the writing is uninspired. Sample exposition-dump: “Did you not hear what they just said? Someone else is looking for Shimmer! And they’ve got a head start! If they get to her first, she won’t hav

The great silence: why haven’t we found any aliens yet?

Given the size and age of the universe, it should be full of species with technology far more advanced than our own. So where are they? • The summer issue of the Long Read magazine is out now. Click here to order During a visit to the Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1950, Enrico Fermi, one of the architects of the Manhattan Project, was having lunch with other physicists when the conversation turned to flying saucers. At one point during the discussion, Fermi blurted out: “Where is everybody?” – or, as another participant remembered it, “Don’t you ever wonder where everybody is?” If aliens exist, in other words, why have we never encountered them? The episode has become famous, marking the moment when extraterrestrial life went from a theme for philosophical speculation to a serious scientific problem. For centuries, people had wondered whether life exists on the moon or Mars, but they

The myth of Anthony Bourdain: how the bad boy chef became a hero to boozehounds and bullies

The author of Kitchen Confidential has inspired a new movie, Tony, about his days as a dishwasher. But do today’s chefs still admire his self-sabotaging rock’n’roll spirit – or have they outgrown it? The trope of the Angry Young Man was not born in a kitchen, but Anthony Bourdain’s particular myth-making created what might be the prototype for fin de (20th) siècle masculinity. As the director of Tony, the new biopic of Bourdain focusing on his first job, has said, the film is about “a magical world where nothing can go wrong and a young man who’s angry about it”. Bourdain arrived in that job, as a dishwasher in a restaurant in Provincetown, Massachusetts, aged 19. He was hellbent on a life of formless, self-sabotaging rebellion, and found his tribe. But when he published his book Kitchen Confidential in 2000, a quarter of a century later, he set the ethos of that kitchen tribe in stone,

Trump put a wrecking-ball through the East Wing – and through democratic norms | Francine Prose

Our children should be able to visit our nation’s capital without having to think about Donald Trump and about how much he did to deface it History has shown us how much dictators and aspiring dictators love building monuments to themselves. They enjoy reminding the world that they can do anything, no matter who is responsible for the physical labor or who will be paying the financial and human cost. They prefer outsized structures, heroic arches, towers and columns designed to prove that their signature and their esthetic will be with us forever, even after they’re dead, though dictators often seem to believe they are too powerful to die. Francine Prose is a former president of PEN American Center and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences Continue reading...

Trump reportedly hid in catering container to board secret flight in Turkey amid Iran threat

Elaborate ruse was used to transport president to military flight from Air Force One in July Donald Trump departed on a secret military flight from Turkey to Britain last month when the White House said he was flying aboard Air Force One, in an extraordinary ruse – prompted by an Iranian assassination threat – that involved hiding the president in an airport catering container, according to reporting from the Washington Post and the New York Times. The operation took place when Trump was in Ankara for a Nato summit with world leaders, according to the Post . The president reportedly boarded the old Air Force One jumbo jet in view of television cameras, and then was secretly shuttled minutes later to a smaller plane via an airport catering truck typically used to load meals and other supplies preflight, a US official told the Post. Zap Rocks. Add Water. Get Clean Hydrogen

In a tranquil Boston suburb , on the far edge of a horse farm, where pasture gives way to woods, a crane lowers an enormous electrode into a borehole. The electrode, a half-meter-long cylinder with copper-tipped arms to ensure good contact with the borehole walls, descends—deeper, deeper—through layers of spongy sandstone to the hard, marbled roots of an ancient mountain range hundreds of meters below ground. Here the rock is tight; there are few cracks for water or gases to flow. But that’s about to change. A stone’s throw away, a second electrode—a twin of the first—has been fixed in another borehole at the same depth. From above ground, a pair of high-voltage generators cabled to the two electrodes fires a series of pulses. Tsss!…Tsss!…Tsss!…Tsss!…Tsss!…. Each discharge, heard faintly at the surface, is like a miniature, subterranean lightning strike. The rock between the electrodes h

The startups were still emerging from garages, and the journalists covering them were often filing stories from their own kitchen tables. Ebay was still a young online auction company founded on the principle that “people are basically good.” As digital retail took off, the Steiners launched an e-zine called EcommerceBytes, catering to a growing community of small business owners who were increasingly using platforms like eBay to sell their wares. “We talked about this being an opportunity for just average people, disabled people, elderly
