Ariana Grande review - glittering hits and powerhouse vocals in stunning return to stage

Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles The pop star’s first tour in seven years brought the house down with emotive ballads and clubby bangers delivered with saucy wit If faced with the choice to erase one’s most painful memories or live with them forever, à la Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind , you’d be forgiven for wanting to wipe them away. On the first night of a five-show run in Los Angeles promoting her 2024 album Eternal Sunshine , Ariana Grande riffed on the idea of memory erasure in an emotive, occasionally zany show that illuminated one of her hardest-won revelations: forgetting her most painful experiences isn’t a bargain she is willing to make. Grande has weathered tragedy and heartbreak in the public eye since her teenage years, including the death of her former boyfriend Mac Miller and the Manchester bombing that killed 22 fans at one of her concerts in 2017. And to make matters worse, it was brutally hot. I was depressed, angry with the world, sunburned, and soaked through with sweat. But as the second track on Conclave, "Habla," settled into its groove, I found myself unconsciously strutting. David Kemp obituary

Artist who built up an imaginative and playful picture of the world using the detritus of defunct industrial plants In 1981 the artist David Kemp went to live in Cornwall, settling in the village of Botallack, on a rugged, far-western clifftop, capped by a clutter of ruined tin mines. He adapted an old building to use as a workshop, and began painting old furniture with crazy, surrealistic scenes of temples, sea views, beasts and breasts. Although this sold well, he became increasingly interested in the rubbish he found lying around. The old mine had been used by all and sundry as a tip. There were, he quipped, “more fridges here than foxes”. Kemp, who has died aged 80, was soon creating art out of junk, fantastic beasts and mystic beings, and began to imagine he had stumbled across the detritus of a long-lost prehistoric cult. Globally significant volcanic event formed Giant’s Causeway, scientists find

Geochronologists say Antrim coastline’s basalt columns developed over 5.5m years – 8m less than thought For centuries, the tale has been passed from generation to generation: how the Irish giant Finn McCool built the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland to fight Benandonner, his Scottish rival, by hurling chunks of the Antrim coastline into the sea. Now, scientists have revealed it was intense volcanic activity during a “major globally impacting volcanic event” – and not a legendary battle between two destructive giants – that led to the formation of the coastline’s 40,000 distinctive interlocking basalt columns about 60m years ago . For a half century, New York was the center of the universe but the joke of the NBA. In these glamour-filled finals, the franchise finally got its moment The New York Knicks had been here before. As Jalen Brunson and his band of not-so-merry men stood at the top of this year’s NBA finals, they confronted not just the San Antonio Spurs, their foe on the court, but the very idea of what the Knicks themselves – as a team, as a franchise, as a symbol of New York City – could be. The team’s run to last year’s Eastern Conference finals was thrilling but had the aspect of an underdog romp, and ultimately ended in defeat. Was this the limit of what New York’s fans, Rabelaisian in their rages and saintly in their endless capacity for patience, could expect from their team? Brunson was dogged and clever but perhaps not quite elite, a Stakhanovite toiler in a league built for transcendent talents.

Let him eat cake! Birthday greetings for President Trump as he turns 80 – from Greta Thunberg, Piers Morgan and more

The 47th has his 80th this weekend – a milestone that surely shouldn’t go unmarked. Artists, activists, writers and thinkers send their messages to the man of the hour (even if they’re unlikely to get a party invite) Cory Doctorow Dear Comrade Trump: On this, the occasion of your 80th birthday, I write to extend my sincere thanks for all the work you have done. After decades of deadlock, you have inspired the world to action! You have done more to de-dollarise the world than any American leader in history. Without you, there would be no way that Ethiopia would be revaluing its national debt in yuan . You have done more to end the global dependence on oil than any leader (except, perhaps, for Comrade Putin). Without you, there would be no way that India would be chucking out its gas hobs and replacing them with induction tops. And, of course, you have done more than any president in histo

Marriage: more than a paper exercise | Brief letters

Marriage wisdom | Fun with numbers | Musk power | Bus destinations | Hockney’s brother I enjoyed Polly Hudson’s wisdom on marriage ( I know it’s taboo – but I’m a big fan of marriage, 9 June ). However, I think she was fundamentally wrong when she wrote: “The haters say marriage is ‘just a piece of paper’, which is fundamentally true”. That would be like saying my degree is only the certificate. In both cases the significance is that which it points towards – something no physical object can truly capture. Four-time Grammy nominated country singer Mickey Guyton does the honors. Starting lineups to come and we should be under way any minute now. One reason the Knicks’ run has resonated so deeply beyond basketball is that it has arrived at a moment when many Americans seem desperate for a distraction. One reason US democracy is in trouble? Its supporters are moving elsewhere | Justin Gest

The recent exodus of people – voluntary and not – from the US threatens to worsen America’s authoritarian slippage The recent frenzy of attempts to redraw electoral districts is ultimately about voice and silence in US democracy. When districts are cut to maximize one ideological perspective, the representation of large concentrations of Americans with opposing views can be diluted or erased. In many of the new Republican-drawn state maps, it will be as if such citizens have departed entirely. Since Donald Trump enacted a series of policies that undermine institutional checks and balances, new population data suggests that, at the same time, many such citizens have departed quite literally. Justin Gest is a professor at George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government. He has authored seven books on the politics of immigration, democracy, and demographic change, including

Scotland victorious on World Cup return after McGinn strike helps clinch win over Haiti

This all proved rather difficult to evaluate as the dust settled. Scotland’s fifth win at a World Cup finals should have been a cause for epic celebration. Victory over Haiti meant this is a team not guaranteed to receive a bloody nose against lesser nations after all. More than 10,000 days after limping out of the World Cup in France, Scotland returned to the biggest stage in football and claimed three points. They top Group C. Yet in the Boston Stadium, the counter narrative was more than a feeling. With Morocco and Brazil to come, this single goal success may prove insufficient as Scotland look to emerge from the group phase for the first time. This regressed into an unconvincing display from Steve Clarke’s team. Haiti lacked the composure to punish that. Still, those who would blindly celebrate Scotland’s win are probably ignoring a bigger picture that should matter. John McGinn’s go

Trump is desecrating the Lincoln Memorial | Ted Widmer

The monument excites reverence for the Declaration of Independence. Of course it is threatening to a president who doesn’t share its egalitarian vision The Lincoln Memorial has always been special. Its siting is perfect, facing the Capitol, across the length of the Mall, as if speaking truth to power. The symmetry of its proportions adds to its moral grandeur. It feels balanced and and open to all, like Lincoln’s vision of democracy. That was consciously on the mind of the architect, Henry Bacon. UFC Freedom 250: White House hosts MMA card for Trump’s 80th birthday – live updates

UFC takes over White House lawn for seven-fight card The stratospheric rise of the UFC’s Dana White UFC to pay fighters in crypto from Trump company Reach out to Bryan on Bluesky or by email Beyond the octagon, the fighter walkouts and the spectacle of a UFC card on White House grounds lies another story: who gets access and what it costs. Sidney Blumenthal argues that Sunday’s event has become a nexus of political fundraising, corporate influence and presidential branding, with million-dollar donor dinners, seven-figure hospitality packages and a guest list that reads as a who’s who of Trump’s political and business network. For Blumenthal, the looming presence of “the Claw” is merely the most visible symbol of a much larger transaction. Here’s a look at tonight’s seven-fight card (in reverse order). The first fight is expected to begin at 8pm ET, with the main event likely shortly befo

Welcome to California: land of plunder and hypocrisy | Mark Arax

From gold to water, California’s wealth was built on extraction. The AI boom is reviving an old question: who pays the price? I was a fourth-grader in the public schools of California when I first learned about the Gold Rush. I remember our teacher, Mrs Dyer, passing down the story in the manner of lore. On the morning of 24 January 1848, James Marshall, a New Jersey boy come west, stumbled upon four shiny nuggets alongside the American River. He tried to keep his discovery a secret, but the shout of “eureka” from the dirt streets of San Francisco rang out across the shore. It unleashed a force that could not be contained. ‘Have I been influenced, or is this actually me?’ How personal taste fell out of fashion

‘Suggestive toothpaste tubes shooting into mouths’: David Hockney’s winking celebration of queer life

I’ve seen framed posters, prints and postcards of the work – which captures the moment after a person jumps off a diving board into an otherwise still cyan blue swimming pool – in countless gay households. In my flat, it appears on a cushion cover that I bought after seeing the real thing at Hockney’s 2017 Tate Britain retrospective . It’s fitting that A Bigger Splash is now emblematic of this pioneer.
